Microsoft is patenting parts of .NET. Should we care? Andy says:

The intent of it is clear, to give them leverage to shut Mono down once .NET is ubiquitous.

This may or may not be true, but Microsoft has to play the patent game like Sun and everyone else. I'm no lawyer, but the way patent law works today, it seems that large companies have no choice but to participate in the patent arms race.

Fortunately software patents don't have a radioactive half-life once society realizes they are a bad idea.
